NGN, Next Generation Networks: What are they and how do they work?
NGN, new generation networks, are increasingly offering more and better technological services to consumers.
Discover today at JSC Ingenium, network infrastructure solutions for MNOs and MVNOS, what they consist of, and how do they work.
What are NGNs?
The term ‘next generation network’ (NGN) can be used for both telecommunications and data services and supports mobility. It can make use of multiple broadband capabilities, especially transportation technologies enabled for Quality of Service (QoS) where service-related functions are independent of underlying transport-related technologies.
The primary goal of the Next Generation Network (NGN) is to serve/function as a replacement for the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).
Nowadays there are different networks for different purposes such as voice, data and all kinds of video. Telephony, Internet and mobile networks refer to different domains and each has its own protocol and services. The idea behind next generation network (NGN) is a network that carries all kinds of data and provides services in the form of packets similar to those used on the Internet. NGNs are typically based on the Internet Protocol (IP). That’s why NGN is sometimes referred to as a ‘fully IP network’ to describe the transformation to the Next Generation Network (NGN).
How do they work?
NGN is a widespread mobility approach and allows for excessive and consistent provision of services to users.
Fundamental characteristics that define NGNs:
- Packet-based transfer.
- Separation of control functions for carrier capabilities.
- Service and network decoupling, and provision of open interfaces.
- A wide range of services, such as streaming or multimedia.
- Interworking with legacy networks through open interfaces.
- Widespread mobility support.
- Support for giving user access to different service providers.
Services supported by:
- Data communication services.
- Multimedia services.
- Services of public interest.
- Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) / Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Simulation and Emulation Services
Next Generation Network Layer:
- The access layer includes different types of media gateways that support connection to and from the access network with the core network.
- The core network layer is the network that handles converged Services based on the Internet Protocol (IP). The control layer acts as a call server. Provides call control functions and also provides control of a media gateway.
- The service layer is an IT platform that creates a service creation environment by extending its functionality to cover new network scenarios, such as an intelligent network.
The deployment of NGN as a global IP infrastructure has a number of implications for regulation and public policies, including competition policy, interconnection, network security and reliability, consumer protection and universal service.
JSC solution to switch to NGN
At JSC Ingenium we offer a solution to network operators that allows them to migrate their traditional networks to the next generation network (NGN) model, incorporating and developing new services, more attractive and sophisticated, but without the need to abandon its traditional Infrastructure.
The objectives that have led JSC Ingenium to develop this new line of products for network operators are:
- Allowing migration by the mobile operator to the next generation model, with low investment cost for each phase.
- Allowing the development of new services based on the NGN model, but in the most efficient way, taking advantage of existing infrastructures.
- Removing dependence of new services on existing infrastructure constraints.
- Offering full adaptability to the needs of global telecommunications and mobile operators.
